PCS, Inc. was contracted to remove precast concrete panels from Ben Franklin Techventures in Bethlehem, PA. The façade of the building consisted of fifteen different size and shape precast panels with weight ranging from 2,100 lbs. to 15,100 lbs.
Demolition crews began the project with removal of the windows and overhang at the roof level. They completed this work utilizing a 120 ft. boom lift. With the purchase of eight Burke lifters, the crew was able to use the precast manufactures pick points designed for the installation. With the use of a 200 ton crane (operated by others), the crew lowered each panel to the ground where they were broken into pieces with a skid loader and breaker to be disposed of in dumpsters as clean fill debris.
The two most challenging parts of the project involved the access in the interior of the building and a few of the panels extended past the aluminum façade and windows, which were to remain. The ability to expose all of the attachment points to the steel structure and concrete slabs was very limited due to the building being occupied. The crew worked in the interior of the building for a couple of weeks leading up to the crane lift, removing small portions of GWB to access the connection points.
This was a very intimidating project to perform and we were very impressed with the crew’s dedication to complete the project safely and damage free.
